LIHU‘E — Koloa residents will have a chance later this month to give their input on a telecommunications facility proposed for their neighborhood by Verizon Wireless.
The Planning Department report says the facility consists of five equipment cabinets, a backup generator, and a “stealth antenna design” to be attached to the top of Koloa’s Big Save Supermarket, located at the intersection of Koloa and Waikomo roads.
“Verizon will place antennas and associated cabling behind a stealth design hidden from public view,” said the report, adding that the installation will blend in with the surrounding area.
The Koloa Community Association has already approved the installation, according to the report.
The mobile phone company was created 10 years ago, but it claims to be the nation’s largest wireless voice and 3G data network, with more than 91 million customers. The New Jersey-based company has 83,000 employees nationwide.
The Kaua‘i Planning Commission scheduled a public hearing at 9 a.m. on July 27, on the first floor of the Mo‘ikeha Building, 4444 Rice Street, Lihu‘e.
