In George Clooney’s second directorial outing he chose to take on one of America’s darkest times in U.S. history. The film was written by Clooney and portrays the conflict between veteran radio and television journalist Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy (U.S. senator of Wisconsin), especially concerning the Communist witch- hunt led by McCarthy, a political agenda that would destroy numerous American lives in the 1950s.
The movie, although released in black and white (best cinematography Oscar nod), was filmed on color film stock but on a gray set (Oscar-nominated art direction), and was later color-corrected to black and white during the editing phase of the movie. This film was a gusty move for Clooney, a film that only someone of his humility, artistry and power could pull off in our current times.
It focuses on the theme of media responsibility, and also addresses what occurs when the media offer a voice of dissent against the government. The movie takes its title from the line with which Murrow routinely closed his broadcasts. There are wonderful performances by Clooney (television’s “E.R.”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Chaplin”) and of course the lead role of Murrow played by character-actor David Strathairn (“The Firm”).
The movie really makes the viewer examine how media, politics and social norms all play a role in our life, sometimes more then they should. Since “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Clooney has produced numerous films, directed a period-piece football comedy titled “Leatherheads,” and most recently acted in the film “The Descendants” right here on Kaua‘i.
“Good Night, and Good Luck” is entertaining and very important for all to see. It’s interesting to see Clooney’s work behind the camera, especially since he has acted for so many great directors and produced films for great directors. George Clooney is an Oscar -nominated actor, writer and director and an Oscar-winning actor. Do not miss number 10 on the top 10 list. Clooney was excellent in “Up in the Air.”
