Hyatt offers ‘green’ rental car option
Green Car Hawai‘i recently partnered with the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa to pilot a program offering visitors the opportunity to rent hybrid cars by the hour or day. Borrowing from successful car sharing programs, this model allows people to rent a hybrid sport utility vehicle to use as needed.
Typically visitors use their cars only 30 to 40 percent of their stay, but being able to rent a car by the hour streamlines usage and minimizes waste, according to a press release. A self-service kiosk in the hotel lobby enables guests to make reservations at an hourly rate of $15, including all fuel and insurance costs. Daily rates are also available.
The car is delivered to the guest by the hotel valet and come equipped with an iPad providing an interactive GPS based island map and virtual tour guide.
Current inventory includes four Ford Escape Hybrids.

The 30-megawatt project will provide power for up to 7,700 homes on O‘ahu when complete. The project — developed by First Wind, an independent U.S.-based wind energy company — is the first of its kind on O‘ahu led by First Wind. The project is supported by an expected $117 Million loan guarantee by the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s expected the large wind project will create 200 jobs during its construction phase.
The project is expected to complete construction by December 2010 with the first electricity flowing early January 2011.
