Nonprofit organizations are big business on Kaua‘i. With over 8,600 nonprofits registered in Hawai‘i, chances are that you, or someone in your family, has benefited from services provided by a nonprofit organization this year.
Motivated by the “public good,” nonprofits have a well-earned reputation of doing more with less; having a committed and hard-working staff; and providing services at a cheaper cost than the government can ever offer. Words like passion; mission driven; and service to the community describe Kaua‘i’s nonprofit organizations. But what words come to mind about “ nonprofit management?”
Nothing? Well, that’s about to change.
The Kaua‘i Community College is offering for the first time ever, a nonprofit Management Certificate Program — tailored to 501 © (3) No-Profit Organization — with coursework considered perfect for small to mid-sized nonprofits; a new or aspiring Executive Director; or anyone interested in learning about the fundamentals in nonprofit management. There are no special requirements for admission to this program although previous college work is an advantage.
“This is the most comprehensive course for nonprofit management available. The personal contacts and access to the power brokers in the nonprofit world is invaluable,” said Executive Director of the ARC in Hawai‘i Colleen Kojima.
Modules include: Introduction to nonprofit Management; Governance, Legal Issues and Board/Staff Partnerships; Mission, Outcomes and Planning; Fund-Raising; Financial Management; Community Relations/Marketing; Human Resources Management; and the Series Integration Module that includes a case study project and evaluation.
The non-credit certificate program is designed to cover fundamental management skills rather than an advanced training opportunity for the long-term Executive Director. Community-based consultants and nonprofit professionals will teach the classes in a collaborative learning environment.
“There is a great need to strengthen nonprofit managers, today, and provide for a new generation of nonprofit leaders on Kaua‘i,” said President and CEO of the Kaua‘i Planning and Action Alliance Diane Zachary. “This program has proven to be successful on other islands, and it’s exciting to have it offered here on Kaua‘i.”
The once a week program begins August 3 and will be offered at the KCC campus, OCET Building, Room 106, with classes held from 9 A.M. – Noon. An investment of 3 hours weekly for the first four Tuesdays in a month through April 2011 (with no classes in December) will earn a nonprofit Management Certificate. The program is designed for the “working professional” with limited outside class time for homework and research. Program cost is $800 for the 8 module series; or $150 for modules 2- 7, and those seeking a nonprofit certificate may be eligible for financial assistance.
An application for tuition assistance is available and scholarships are being offered at the KCC Office of Continuing Education and Training or call 245-8351. Class sizes are limited and scholarship is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
