WAIMEA — Residents of Camp Kapalawai were put on alert when a brush fire broke out near their homes in Waimea at around 1:30 Saturday afternoon, county officials said in a news release this evening.
No one was injured in the fire and no evacuations were required.
Approximately four acres of land owned by Gay & Robinson burned in the brush fire off Kaumuali‘i Highway near mile marker 22, the release says.
Ten firefighters from the Waimea and Hanapepe stations, four rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station, and a battalion chief responded to the fire, along with Goodfellow Bros. Inc. and Gay & Robinson water tanker operators.
In addition, Kaua‘i police assisted with traffic control.
The fire was deemed under control at around 2:30 p.m. and fully extinguished at 3:30 p.m.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
With the dry season approaching, fire officials are asking residents and visitors to be cautious.
Fire prevention tips offered by the Kaua‘i Fire Department include:
— Don’t throw lighted cigarettes out of a car window.
— Don’t park your vehicle on dry grass.
— Never leave a fire unattended, i.e. campfires and backyard burning.
