PUHI — Ken Dorland, a member of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Race Committee, finished with the winning hand, Sunday.
The winning hand came during the first-ever Moped/Motor Scooter Poker Run hosted by Two Wheels/Motorcycles Period in Puhi.
“I got it on a pair of nines,” Dorland said during the NYC Horse and Pony Series, Race No. 2, Thursday at Nawiliwili Harbor. “The prize was really nice — a jacket valued at $150 with nice padding on the back and sides.”
Tom Leighton, in an e-mail, said the jacket was the top prize for the winning poker hand. The “Speed & Strength” jacket was donated by Tucker-Rocky Distributors.
Stan and Justina Cherry, sharing a ride on a nice yellow motor scooter, were the second and third place winners, respectively, Stan taking the “jackpot.”
Wilbert Pereira finished fourth, followed by Lee Jeal aboard his Lambretta. Larry Duque, earning the Best Rat Bike award, finished sixth with David Tao, winner of the Best Paint award, rounding out the field.
Leighton said the turnout for the first-ever event was better than he could have hoped for, and is already looking toward hosting another. He said there were numerous prizes awarded from contributions by Tucker-Rocky Distributors, Parts Unlimited, Fox Racing and the host Motorcycles Period/Two Wheels.
“This was a lot of fun,” Dorland said. “It was tiring, but a lot of fun. I’m glad I took part in it.”
