Joseph Soares
Joseph “Uncle Joe” Alexander Soares of Kalaheo died July 6, 2010, at Queen’s Medical Center, O‘ahu, at age 89. Born on March 28, 1921, in Kalaheo, he worked with the National Weather Bureau Service and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as chief of flight services.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Mary Soares, and brother Harry Soares.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Soares; sons Clifford (Anelyn) Soares, Calvin (Leona) Soares, Clement (Patti) Soares of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jared (Wanda) Soares of Fort Collins, Colo.; daughter Carmel (Scott) Soares of Tampa, Fla.; brother Manuel (Tove) Soares of Pearlridge, O‘ahu; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Casual attire is suggested.
Visitation at 9 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, July 13, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Otto ‘Bud’ Powers
Otto Carroll “Bud” Powers of Kapa‘a died June 27, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on April 9, 1917, in Columbus, Ohio, he was a captain in the United States Army, served in World War II.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Powers, son Bill Powers, numerous friends and ‘ohana.
Visitation at 9 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., on Saturday, July 17, at Saint Catherine’s Catholic Church in Kapa‘a.
Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted.
Steven Kaauwai
Steven Kalani Kaauwai of Lihu‘e died July 6, 2010, at Kaiser Hospital at age 58. Born on March 23, 1952, at Kapiolani Hospital, he was a shuttle bus driver with National Rental Car.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Kaauwai; parents John and Barbara Kaauwai; daughters Glenda (Joe) Ola of Las Vegas, Stephanie (Jeff) Escott of Connecticut, and Barbara Jean Kaauwai; sons Gerry (Tracy) Rayray of Boston, and Gavino (Tonya) Rayray of Puhi; grandchildren Cherelle, Kylie, Joey, Jerry Boy, Ashley, Autumn, Amelia, Cobie, Gevon, Hunter Thomas, Sean and Connor; brothers John (Charlott) Kaauwai of Hilo, and Duane Kaauwai of Anahola; sisters Cheryl (Tony) Wilson of Honolulu, Lana (Judy) Go of Kapa‘a, Lehua (Dane) Cougar of Honolulu, Kathy (Tim) Kaauwai of Anahola, and Lisa (Gary) Abel of Kapa‘a; numerous uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., services at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, July 16, at Kapa‘a First Hawaiian Church. Cremation to follow.

Joseph “Joe Joe” Masaru Fukumoto of Honolulu died July 2, 2010, at his home at age 83. Born in Koloa, Kaua‘i, he was a USAF veteran and a bus driver for the City and County of Honolulu.
He is survived by his wife Ena Fukumoto; sons Christopher, Jason, Joseph “Braddah,” Kalani and Lyle “Liko”; daughters Romina, Heidi and April; brothers Ted Fukumoto, Randy Fukumoto, Gary Fukumoto and Gaylord Fukumoto; sisters Janet “Jay” Ruiz, Myra Muramoto, Helen Hirano, Gladys Yoshii and Naomi Masaki; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation and services at 10 a.m., on Thursday, July 15, at Moanalua Mortuary. Inurnment at 1 p.m. at the Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery.
