KAPA‘A — Marlon Cudiamat was one of the leaders who pulled Hanakila past the Kaua‘i Ballers in the third quarter, Thursday night in Kapa‘a.
Cudiamat was named the Most Valuable Player following the 48-35 Hanakila win at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
“There’re so many teams in the summer league, we’re only announcing one MVP for each of the age groups,” said Karen Matsumoto of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association. “Our next big playoff is (Saturday) when the Girls 14 and Under fight for the championship in their division at Kapa‘a.”
The 14 and Under girls title game will see the Kaua‘i Ballers A taking on Kaulupono starting at 1 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley gym.
Wheeler Batol had two buckets for the Kaua‘i Ballers, his first coming at the halftime buzzer to pull the Kaua‘i Ballers to a 20-20 deadlock capping 12 minutes of intense defensive efforts between Hanakila and the Kaua‘i Ballers.
Batol’s second bucket, a launch from outside the three-point line, did little to slow Hanakila who pulled out to a 16-8 showing en route to its final 48-35 margin. Batol finished the night with five points.
Kaua‘i Ballers notched four treys, two from Morean Clement, who was everywhere on the court, and one from Leevi Bethel who finished with seven points in the effort, his trey a last-quarter event.
Clement ended the night with 13 points, tying Hanakila’s Matthew Cummings and Cudiamat.
James Stevens added 10 points to the Hanakila win, followed by Denmark Aladin netting eight of his game-total nine points in the second half. Brison Nacapuy rounded out the win with three fourth-quarter points.
Steven McCabe anchored the inside for the Kaua‘i Ballers, gearing for boards rather than points and ending with six points. Randy Aron added four points in the effort.
Earlier in the night, Westside Basketball clinched the third place for the Boys 14 and Under with five overtime points en route to a 41-36 win over Hanakila A, the victim of two critical foul-outs.
“They had no bench left,” said Steven Matsumoto, the clock keeper.
Rashaan Kuhaulua topped the Hanakila effort with 15 points, followed by Angelito Roslin netting 10 points and Tryston Dela Cruz adding eight points before fouling out. Jed Rabudo marked three final-period points before also fouling out.
Christian Acob had two overtime points en route to a game-high 17 points in Westside Basketball’s third place win. Mark Abalos also marked a bucket in overtime en route to his 13-point contribution. Bobby Oliver added four points, Briggs Agu had an overtime charity point toward his game-total three points with pairs from Jamin Fernandez and Ikaika Wilson rounding out the win.
Clifton Asuncion and Organic Apples’ player/coach Brandon Wong finished with nine points each in a 48-48 tie against the Bull Horns, who got eight points apiece from Lindsey Brandenburg, Douglas Lewis and Cheston Omo.
That tie came in the KYBA Men’s 18 and Over game in Kapa‘a when both teams, each anxious for the win, succumbed to exhaustion with the extended time, Karen said.
Casey Anacleto posted a game-high 22 points to lead Kaulupono to a 57-29 win over Waimea to lock in one of the G14U championship slots.
Nicole Palacio added 16 points for Kaulupono.
Tiana Apilado and Caitlyn-Amber Owen posted nine and eight points, respectively for Waimea.
Waimea will play for third place in the G14U division against the Kaua‘i Ballers B starting at noon. Other games scheduled in Kapa‘a are the playoffs for the Boys Under 12 division and a Women’s 18 and Over game starting at 4 p.m.
