LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Fire Department inspectors continue to work to determine the cause of a Monday-evening fire on Royal Drive in Wailua Homesteads, states a county press release.
Neighbors alerted the owner of the home immediately after noticing the fire in the upstairs studio apartment, so the owner, her brother and three small dogs living in the two-bedroom home below the apartment were able to escape without injury, and were even able to move a car and motorcycle out of harm’s way, states the release.
Firefighters from the Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e stations responded to the 5:38 p.m. alarm, and the fire was deemed under control by 6:08 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:45 p.m.
The fire, though, spread from the upstairs studio to the downstairs main, two-bedroom home, causing an estimated $700,000 to homes and contents, the release states.
The American Red Cross and neighbors are providing assistance to the displaced residents, states the release.
