LIHU‘E — The Citizens’ Advisory Committee came up with a list of its top five general recommendations after conducting eight community meetings and receiving more than 400 responses from over 1,300 surveys sent to Kekaha homeowners.
The list included projects in the Kekaha Beach Park and the Kekaha Community Center, a new community pool, promoting renewable energy projects, and drainage improvements to Kekaha Road.
After learning that the much-needed improvements of the drainage system in Kekaha Road were already funded and almost ready to go through, the CAC decided to drop the item from the list and concentrate on the top four items.
The current list of recommendations includes eight proposed projects derived from the top four items.
1. Bathrooms at Kekaha Beach Park ($156,000 capital, $22,500 annual maintenance)
2. Kekaha Beach parking and beach access ($10,000 capital, $1,000 annual maintenance)
3. Kekaha Community Center: Ceiling fans ($13,000 capital, $1,000 annual maintenance); Portable fans ($2,200 capital, $300 annual maintenance); Roof vents ($5,000 capital, $1,200 annual maintenance)
4. Kekaha Beach Park Concession Stand: Option 1, using recycled shipping containers to create the structure ($55,000 capital, $5,000 annual maintenance); Option 2, building a bricks and mortar structure ($99,000 capital, $5,000 annual maintenance); Option 3, designing and improving an area for one or two privately owned concession stands to be located ($4,500 capital, $1,000 annual maintenance)
5. Kekaha Community Center stage roof ($30,000 capital, $1,000 annual maintenance)
6. Kekaha Community kiddies park ($108,000 capital, $2,000 annual maintenance)
7. Set aside funding for a community pool ($250,000)
8. Solar hot water systems for residents ($117,500)
