NAWILIWILI — Malihini enjoyed the 15-20 knot winds as the trades returned just in time for the start of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Horse and Pony Series that kicked off Thursday.
Malihini, with Doug Gibson at the stick, slipped past Fast Company coming in from the long leg to the Ninini Point turnaround and capitalized on the trades to hold off the Olson 30, crossing the single long leg on an elapsed 26:56 and correcting to 27:37 PHRF.
They followed that with a first finish as Tim Perry skippered the pony, combining for two points for first overall.
Fast Company, which relinquished its lead to Malihini, crossed on an elapsed sail of 28:03 and corrected to 28:06, Jim Saylor skippering its pony to a second finish for a combined 4 points.
OZone, battling Fast Company throughout, crossed on an elapsed 28:52, less than a minute back of Fast Company, and corrected to a 28:55 PHRF for a solid horse third place.
But its pony, skippered by Steve Mitchell, was bested by Quanah Green, the skipper of Speedy’s pony, resulting in OZone and Speedy accumulating a combined horse and pony score of seven points, a tie for third place.
Speedy crossed on an elapsed sail of 31:02 and corrected to a PHRF 31:05.
Coyote rounded out the field on an elapsed sail of 34:15, correcting to a 32:05 PHRF and its pony, skippered by Doug Moore, finished fifth for a combined 10 points.
Sharon Gibson, the NYC scorekeeper said the club will be busy with the Offshore Series, Race No. 4 getting underway today and concluding Monday.
The Horse and Pony series continues Thursday with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
