LIHU‘E — County officials in a press release said the schedule for residential rubbish pickup for most residences on Kaua‘i changed Thursday, even for those not yet converting to the automated system.
There appears to be some confusion about the changes, as some people in Wailua Homesteads reported not getting any information from the county about their collection days changing.
Some Puhi neighborhoods didn’t get rubbishcollection at all this week, as the old collection day, Friday, was changed to Monday, effective July 1, creating a 10-day gap between the last June collection, June 25, and the first July collection, Monday, July 5.
In some neighborhoods, people put their trash curbside for the normal Fridaymorning collection, only to find it sitting there after the previous, early-morning schedule changed.
Several homes also placed the new, automated containers next to their old containers.
If they do that Monday, the automated trash truck will only collect the larger, county-issued receptacle.
For information on new refuse-pickup days, see www.kauai.gov/refusecollection, stop by any county transfer station, neighborhood center or state public library, or call 241-4895 during normal business hours.
The county Department of Public Works Solid Waste office was closed on the first-ever furlough Friday, and is closed Monday in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The office will reopen on Tuesday.
