KAPA‘A — A putback swung the tide for the Nite Owls, the difference resulting in a 68-66 win over Manny’s Sports, Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
After exchanging leads throughout the night, Braxton Garma of the Nite Owls passed the ball to Ray Bode for a layup. The ball bounced to Kapono Cummings whose putback swung the pedulum to the Owls at the final buzzer in one of six games hosted by the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association and the County of Kaua‘i.
Earlier in the evening, Hanakila B guard Keliikoa Baclayon and James Stevens teamed up for eight point apiece to lead the 14 and Under Boys team to a 40-30 showing over the Kaua‘i Ballers, who got eight points each from Morean Clement and Leevi Bethel.
In the second Hanakila matchup, Keali‘i Colipano, younger brother of Kapa‘a High School standout guard Kekoa Colipano, finished with 20 points in a 47-39 loss to the Kaua‘i Ballers, who got 26 points from Michael Booth in the win.
Kaleo Cummings, Kapono’s older brother, finished the night with 21 points to lead the Nite Owls in a Men’s 18 and Over match. Garma finished with 17 points, followed by Clareson Torres with 10 points.
Bradley Coloma led the Manny’s Sports effort with 16 points, Manny’s holding the lead in every quarter of the game except the final one. Canaan Higa finished with 14 points, Michael Lindsey added 13 points and Manolito Pescador finished with 11 points in the effort.
Tab Matsumoto fired off a game-high 24 points in C-Town’s 86-50 win over Tropang-L in a Men’s 18 and Over game played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Austin Simao and Olin Claussen added 19 and 12 points, respectively, toward the victory.
James Badua topped the Tropang-L scoring on 15 points, followed by Sammy Perpose with 10 points.
Reymund Mendoza, the West Kaua‘i Hornets’ workhorse, finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Hornets’ 35-33 edge over Westside Basketball in a Boys 12 and Under game in Kalaheo.
Bernny Ned ended with 14 points in the win for the Hornets, who came back from a 28-26 third-quarter deficit.
Briggs Agu, the strong guard for Westside, finished with 14 points to top the effort followed by low post Bobby Oliver adding nine points.
Lanakila Wilson, getting a career-high 31 points in Lihu‘e’s last outing, was contained to 27 points in Lihu‘e’s 45-31 loss to Papalina who got 20 points from its strong center Kamea Palama-Alquiza.
Ikaika Basketball under coach Clay Tang will open an exhibition series of games in the Boys 14 and Under program when the visiting Honolulu team tips off against the Kaua‘i Ballers, Friday night starting at 7 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Ikaika will also play Hanakila on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. and will be at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center on Sunday for a noon showdown against Hanakila before attending the Kaua‘i Hospice “Concert in the Sky” at Vidinha Stadium.
