KALAHEO — Lihu‘e picked up its first win, the Kamikaze faltered at the charity stripe, and Ian Khan tucked in a game-high 41 points in Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association games, Monday.
Malyssa Manera came up with seven of her game-total nine points in the second half to lead Lihu‘e to its 26-17 edge over Kaulupono in the first of two Girls 12 and Under games.
That win redeemed its 21-20 loss to Kaulupono earlier in the KYBA summer league and was the first win for Lihu‘e in the summer program, said Karen Matsumoto of the KYBA.
Following Manera, Motu Taumalolo added eight points and guard Marissa Martinez ended with six points. Monique Tomacder and Mie Miller ended with two and one points, respectively, but the scoring belying their importance in defense as Miller was in the thick of a physical defensive effort in the paint while Tomacder worked the outside and inside.
Kiarra Palacio led the Kaulupono effort with six points followed by Schae-Marie Tavita with four points and Melia Okura adding three points, but key in height control inside. Pairs from Lauren Lagoc and Jasmine Santella rounded out the effort.

Brandee Burton, the field general for Westside, iced the victory with the opener of another charity pair with 11 seconds showing.
But the Kamikaze, battling back from a 12-1 deficit, put on a strong showing, only to drop the heartbreaker with 3.9 seconds showing when a two free throws refused to find the hole.
Burton topped the Westside scoring, netting nine points, five coming in the second half, but ending 1-for-8 at the foul line. Apilado added seven points, Alyssa Pigao had four first-half points and a first half pair from Athena Abadilla rounded out the win.
Ashley Lucas topped the Kamikaze effort with nine points, followed by Kalia Shimabukuro ending with six points and Kaelee Esposo coming up with four of her game-total five points in the second half. A second-half digit from Chyna Hanano accounted in the effort.
Ian Khan ended the night with a game-high 41 points to lead the SupaStars to a 93-63 win over the Organic Apples, who got 19 points from Jeremy Robinson.
