LIHU‘E — The Lihu‘e Broncos made a strong showing at the Protect Our Nation’s Youth state tournament, but ultimately came up one win shy of the championship round in Hilo.
After starting off the tournament with victories on Friday and Saturday to go to 2-0, the Lihu‘e Broncos lost their two games Monday afternoon, thus knocking them out of the double-elimination tournament.
They lost the first game to Ewa Ewa, 14-1. They then took on Waianae, as both teams had records of 2-1, but lost the elimination game, 11-7.
Ewa Ewa went on to win the championship with a 5-4 victory over Waianae, Tuesday.
That win sends them to the Western Zone Bronco tournament in California.
The Lihu‘e Mustangs were also playing their PONY state tournament on the Big Island, but saw their week come to an end on Sunday.
Having suffered their first loss in the second round, the Mustangs had to run the table from that point. It was not to be, as a 7-5 loss to Makakilo-Kapolei spelled the end of their tournament.
Waianae went on to take the Mustang championship and the spot in the California Zone tournament. Having entered the championship round with one loss, it had to beat Aiea twice for the crown. Each game came down to the wire, with extra innings needed for both.
Waianae took the first game, 5-2 in seven innings. It then won the state title with a 9-7, eight-inning victory.
All games were played at the Walter Victor Baseball Complex in Hilo.
