Shai Anne Abigania had 14 points and Kunani Tuttle added a dozen marks to lead the Kaua‘i Ballers to a 44-10 win over the Kamikaze in the first of two Girls 12 and Under basketball games played Friday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Hina Tafiti finished with six points to lead the Kamikaze at the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association summer league games.
Tiana Apilado, taking the lead in a Westside loss Thursday night, again led the Westside Basketball with 17 points, this time Westside taking a 28-15 win over Lihu‘e.
Athena Abadilla, the reigning Kaua‘i District Spelling Bee champion, added four points in the victory.
Marissa Martinez and Malyssa Manera netted six and four points, respectively, to lead the Lihu‘e effort.
Kaua‘i Intescholastic Federation girls basketball standouts, Mahea Hanie-Grace of Kapa‘a and Kristle Henry of Kaua‘i High combined for 35 points to lead the Kamikaze to a 52-41 showing over the KHS Alumni in the Women 18 and Over league.
“This was another ‘reunion’ night for the 18-over women’s team,” said Karen Matsumoto of the KYBA. “It was fun watching the Kaua‘i HS Alumni play the Kamikaze. They are competitive, and they can shoot threes, too!”
Despite the 11-point difference in the victory, KHS Alumni stayed close through the second and third periods, overcoming a 17-5 first-quarter deficit to pull to within four points, 25-21 at the half.
But that was as close as the Alumni was able to get as the Kamikaze increased the margin to seven points, 37-30 after three periods.
Cliflynn Bukoski finished with nine points, including two three-balls, to lead the KHS Alumni, along with Belinda Butac, who fired a trey.
Hanie-Grace finished with two three-balls and Henry added a trey in the first quarter.
Brandon Wong, the coach of the KHS Alumni, will be on the floor Monday night with his boys’ team, the Organic Apples in the last game of three.
The Organic Apples, pulling out a late-game edge over Tropang-L in the season-opener, Tuesday, will meet the SupaStars, a handy winner over Manny’s Sports, Thursday, starting at 8 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Earlier in the night, Kaulupono hosts Lihu‘e in the first of two Girls 12 and Under games starting at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Kamikaze meet Westside Basketball.
