LIHU‘E — The county Planning Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved a reduction in the salary of Planning Director Ian Costa.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. recommended the commission reduce the salary for the position by 9.23 percent to match what county employees under the furlough plan will be losing in their monthly wages.
Carvalho appoints the commissioners, who in turn hire the planning director. For this reason, the mayor needed the commission’s approval to make the salary adjustment. He has already reduced the salaries of department heads directly appointed by him.
The annual budget for the planning director’s salary is $114,848.
The Kaua‘i County Council plans to evaluate the financial and operational impacts of the furloughs six months after implementation. In case the furlough is lifted, all department heads who had their salaries reduced will receive full salary again.
The county furlough plan goes into effect Friday.
