LIHU‘E — Tickets for the Mayhem at the Mansion are still available when the doors to the event open at 5 p.m. at the Kilohana Estates in Puhi, said Rocky Pascua.
A ladies kickboxing bout opens the fightcard when the event gets underway at 6 p.m.
Lisa Ha of HMC and Danielle Majewski of Submit Jiu Jitsu square off in one of two women’s bouts. The pair battle in the 125-pound Women’s Kickboxing.
“We already weighed in, Thursday,” said Jocelyn Fernandez of Team Bulls Pen, who arrived to the Friday afternoon weigh-in with her husband Dino, coach of Team Bulls Pen and recent recipient of Coach of the Year honors at the Hawai‘i MMA awards on O‘ahu. “In addition to Cara Machado, we have Bill Takeuchi and Daniel Asuncion fighting.”
Team Bulls Pen joined its coach in being named Gym of the Year at the June 11 event and were presented awards by Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona.
Machado will be squaring off against Vernadine “Vee” Vickers of Submit Jiu Jitsu in a 125-pound Women’s MMA match while Takeuchi will tangle with Daniel Deanda of Kamole in the 125-pound MMA. Asuncion squares off against Ryan Tampon of Hawaiian MMA out of Hilo on the Big Island in a 135-pound MMA.
Freelance Kaua‘i will field two fighters, Isaac Worth who will battle Justin Barit of North Shore MMA in a 185-pound MMA, and Domenick Ansagay who will meet Adam Rivera of Hakuilua in a 125-pound MMA match.
Pono Pananganan of KTI Jiu Jitsu, Kapa‘a, will square off against Brett Malphrus of C3 Fighters out of Seattle, Wash. in a 160-lb. MMA event.
Vance Pascua, the event promoter, said the other main event had to be scrubbed when one of the fighters, a fire fighter, was injured on the job and had to withdraw.
“We will have a lot of young people helping with this tournament,” said Rocky Pascua who served as hostess for the Friday weigh-in. “The Sassy Girls from Sweet and Sassy in ‘Ele‘ele will be the ring girls. They will be joined by the Kapa‘a High School cheerleaders, and we’ve always had help from the Junior ROTC program, and the Boy Scouts.”
Rocky said in addition to these young people, there will be representatives from DMD Modeling, the Little Miss and Teen Miss. She said members of Halau Hula o Haliileo will also be helping during fight night.
“We want to promote this as a clean tournament,” Rocky said, reminding fighters that if their CDs for introductory music contains non age-appropriate material, it will be substituted. “We won’t tolerate alcohol or drugs.”
“This is not an easy sport,” Rocky said. “We want to demonstrate to the young people the importance of discipline, respect and honor. Young people need to respect, not just their coaches, but their parents, teachers and friends.”
