LIHU‘E — The Lihu‘e Mustang and Bronco All-Star teams each got off to strong starts with victories at the Protect Our Nation’s Youth state tournament on the Big Island.
The tournaments began Friday in Hilo and the Lihu‘e Mustangs used their bats to notch a 12-8 victory over Mililani.
That result puts them at 1-0 heading into today’s game against Waianae, scheduled for 8 a.m.
The Lihu‘e Broncos shut out their Maui opponent, 4-0, to also move to 1-0 in the double-elimination format tournament. They will now take on Hilo at 3:30 p.m. today.
Each tournament features eight teams from Kaua‘i, the Big Island, O‘ahu and Maui.
In other Mustang scores, which are teams consisting of players ages 9-10, Aiea topped Makakil-Kapolei 14-9, Hilo beat Big Island 7-3 and Waianae topped Maui 11-5.
The Broncos are the older group, with players ages 11-12. Hilo was a 7-6 winner over Ko‘olau, Ewa Ewa thrashed Kona by a 20-1 margin and Waianae took an 8-4 win over Mililani.
The tournament runs through Tuesday at the Walter Victor Baseball Complex.
