That game was just one of five games played at two different sites as the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association hosted the opening game of the Women 18 and Over summer league.
Grande, finishing with 11 points, topped the Kalaheo scoring, getting her final three points on the bomb that came with 2:11 remaining in the game to stalemate the action.
Molly Connelly budged the deadlock on the tail end of a charity pair, getting her first of three game points with 1:28 showing.
Kelsey Cadiente got the feed from Molly to seal the deal on a bucket with less than a minute left in the game.
Following Grande’s lead, Erin Connelly contributed nine points, followed by Kelsey Cadiente and Janessa Grady finishing with five points apiece. Mollie Connelly finished with three and a pair from Kori Sakamoto rounded out the win.
Kira Nakamura and Leihua McCabe led the Kaua‘i Ballers with seven points each in the game that saw the Kaua‘i Ballers hold a 26-16 lead at the half, but then score just one point in the final frame.
That point came from Kennilyn Nakamura who ended with six, followed by Leina‘ala McCabe with five points.
Earlier in the night, the Kaua‘i Ballers forfeited their match when both the A and B teams could not field the required number of players for the Girls 14 and Under division.
Four of the five Supastars finished in double-digit scoring to post a 73-61 win over Manny’s Sports in an 18 and Over Men’s game in Kapa‘a.
Nicole Palacio ended with 19 points and Casey Anacleto added 11 points to lead Kaulupono to a 47-18 win over Waimea, which got seven points from Tiana Apilado in the first of two games played in Kalaheo.
Kapono Cummings ended with 15 points, Braxton Garma added a dozen, and Kaleo Cummings and Clareson Torres each finished with 10 points to lead the Nite Owls to a 66-25 win over Westside Pride in the Men’s 18 and Over match in Kalaheo.
Harold Pablo and Benjamin Buyat Jr. each fired nine points to lead the Westside Pride.
Nathan Smith fired off three treys en route to his game-total 20 points in the Supastars’ victory.
Ian Clements, threading heavy traffic underneath, also fired a trio of three-balls toward his 19 points. Ian Khan netted three treys as well en route to his 16 points.
Darren Takashima was the anchor in the paint with 14 points followed by Jon Ching adding four points in the win.
Michael Lindsey topped Manny’s Sports scoring with 14 points, followed by Matthew Lindsey and Manolito Pescador Jr. adding a dozen points each. Canaan Higa came off the bench for nine points and Spam Lindsey was strong inside for six points.
The next KYBA 18 and Over Men’s game will be Monday when the Organic Apples, a winner over Tropang-L, and the Supastars tip off starting at 8 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
