LIHU‘E — Patrick Belmonte of Kilauea, 47, died Wednesday night as the result of wounds sustained when he lost control of his motorcycle in Anahola, states a county press release.
According to a preliminary Kaua‘i Police Department report, Belmonte was westbound on Kukuihale Road near the Pilipoli Road junction at around 9:30 p.m. when he apparently hit the edge of the pavement, lost control and crashed.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states.
An investigation is ongoing, but it appears that speed may have been a factor in this case.
Belmonte is the eighth traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year, matching the total for all of 2009. The 2009 total was the lowest in the last five years.
All eight of those who have died on Kaua‘i roads this year were Kaua‘i residents.
