LIHU‘E — A program to help keep families in their homes was given a boost Thursday night when the A&B Foundation provided a $2,000 grant to the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity.
Anne Dimock, development director for Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, said the contribution will fund the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s work in Family Support.
“This grant will directly support work to develop a comprehensive orientation to building with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity for future homeowners,” Dimock said in a release. “It will also help prevent foreclosures and reduce mortgage delinquencies among the current homeowners.”
Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity has built 103 homes around Kaua‘i to date and anticipates building at least 100 more in the next six years, the release states.
Recently, four college students from Connecticut spent two weeks building trusses in anticipation of plans getting the go-ahead so work can proceed on another home at the ‘Ele‘ele site, said Bob McNamara, the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity construction superintendent, during a visit with the volunteers at the Habitat’s Hanapepe facility.
The facility is located in Hanapepe on Kaumuali‘i Highway at the corner of the turn-off leading to the Salt Pond complex.
Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity provides Kaua‘i people with safe, decent and affordable shelter, the release states.
Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is a community organization, working in partnership with people of all faiths who are dedicated to the organization’s mission of helping families in need to build and renovate affordable housing on the island.
While volunteers and partner families provide most of the labor, individual and corporate donors provide the funding and materials to build Kaua‘i Habitat homes.
Partner families’ mortgage payments are placed into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more homes, these new homes being sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
By utilizing this system, Kaua‘i Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from Kaua‘i.
Visit www.kauaihabitat.org for more information or to volunteer, donate or apply for housing.
