NAWILIWILI — Quanah Green is not just a Junior.
Green, who celebrated his birthday when the Nawiliwili Yacht Club started the Junior Series three weeks ago, also pilots Speedy, said his dad Tom Green.
Quanah’s double duty as both a Junior and the skipper of the Olson 30 pulled Speedy into third place at the Thursday race when she slipped in on a fourth overall 1:14:41 elapsed sail but corrected out to third place at 1:14:48 PHRF, just about a minute ahead of Malihini, the 35-foot catamaran who had Liliana Perry, 9, serving as her junior.
Malihini crossed on an elasped sail of 1:13:37 after recovering from a last-place starting position and corrected to a 1:15:28 PHRF in the 6-mile course under winds coming out of the North-northeast at 8-12 knots, described by NYC Race Committee as “a lovely wind.”
Earlier, Fast Company, with Jim Saylor at the stick and Jared Webb as its junior, overcame a starting maneuver by Papa‘au to slip ahead of the pack and take an early lead, holding off an OZone challenge throughout the race to finish on an 1:05:52 elapsed sail and correcting out to 1:05:58 PHRF for its top finish.
OZone, with Melissa Rapozo as its junior, utilized different tacks than Fast Company in an effort at overtaking her, finishing on a 1:09:38 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:09:44 PHRF for second place.
Coyote, jockeying to third place just before the start horn with Riley Young as its junior, was nudged back in the pack, finishing 1:21:09 elapsed, but correcting out to a 1:03:01 CLUB for top honors in that class. Her PHRF correction came in at 1:16:00 for fifth place in that class.
Papa‘au, making movements up in the front of the pack at the start and throughout the race, was penalized for not having a junior on board, despite her 1:14:02 elapsed sail which corrected out to 1:10:52 PHRF. She shared that berth with Bonjolea, an X-342 representing the three wahine in the Tiffany family, who finished with a 1:20:56 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:17:49 PHRF.
The Junior Series wraps up Thursday with the final race of the series, but before that event, the NYC invites the public to enjoy its annual Father’s Day keiki fishing contest, Sunday at the NYC Clubhouse located at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.
Anglers are invited to bring their fathers and the rest of the ‘ohana to enjoy the hospitality of the NYC on Father’s Day.
Registration for keiki anglers is $5 per fisherman and will take place starting at 10:30 a.m. The registration fee entitles the young fisherman between the ages of 3 to 13 years old to a NYC “yachtdawg” and soda.
Fishing begins from 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. with awards being presented from 1:30 p.m.
Bill Georgi is the chair for this annual event that provides fun and excitement for the young anglers and their families.
