LIHU‘E — Work is not expected to begin before June 21 to repair a broken water line for Polihale State Park, after the line broke Wednesday night.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources in a press release stated there is no water flowing to operate the park’s toilets or showers, though portable toilets were expected to be delivered.
The DLNR Division of State Parks has temporarily suspended issuance of new camping permits and has been notifying those with permits about the water outage.
The water-line break caused the park well to run dry, but State Parks staff were able to stop the pump in time to prevent it from being damaged.
By June 21, when repairs will begin, the DLNR said in the release they hope the well will have replenished itself enough so the repair crew can locate the leak and make repairs.
The park remains open, though the public is asked not to use the restrooms which do not have water to operate.
Three commercial kayak companies that haul out at Polihale have been notified, and they will provide water for their customers and allow them to stop at a nearby county park to use the restrooms there, the release states.
