LIHU‘E — The state Department of Transportation advises Kaua‘i residents that at Lihu‘e Airport, Runway 35/17, the runway nearest the ocean, will be closed Monday night through Friday morning, from 1:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., for airfield maintenance work to remove rubber deposits and repaint the pavement surface.
This work is scheduled at night to minimize disruption to flight schedules, a state news release says. Since flight schedules have been adjusted, there will be increased arrivals and air traffic noise from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. All work is weather-permitting.
This work is necessary to comply with Federal Aviation Administration safety standards and is a yearly requirement to ensure the safety of visitors and residents by ensuring that aircraft are able to see the runways clearly at night and may stop safely.
