Rules and information about the new divisions for the Home Economics show at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair should be available at the University Extension Service Office.
Lenore Klass, chair of the Home Economics show, said there will be three new areas that people can participate in for this year’s farm fair which opens Aug. 26 at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.
From 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 26, participants need to bring in their crafts, sewing projects and baked goods to be eligible for judging at the fair.
Klass said one of the new divisions is a baking contest with Open Judging, an exciting concept for the fair.
“If you’ve always wanted to enter a refrigerated pie, now is the time,” Klass said in an e-mail. “Enter any one-crust dessert pie to be judged on August 28 before an audience.”
The pie needs to be registered on Aug. 26 in advance of the judging. On the day of judging, the refrigerated pie must be transported to the fair at 12:30 p.m. in a chilled cooler.
Open judging is an entertaining way to learn how the judging process works, as well as an opportunity for the exhibitor to learn new techniques in baking, Klass said.
In addition to the open judging, this year’s special ingredient is the macadamia nut which can be used to bake a bread, muffins, cookies, cake, or other dessert not requiring refrigeration.
A flier that will be available at the farm fair will list the featured ingredients for the next three years.
The popular Lego contest for juniors will be available again this year, and in addition to the Lego contest, a new category of Handmade Jewelry will be available to junior crafters.
The home economics show informational guidelines and rules are encouraged for anyone interested in participating in the farm fair, Klass said.
“You do not want to be disqualified for incorrect entries,” she said.
The “General Information and Rules” folder should be available at the University Extension Service Office, Room 210, State Building and the neighborhood centers in mid-June.
