The Malihini winds, sustained trades in the 10-20-knot range with gusts to 30 mph, pushed the 35-foot catamaran to the top of a six-boat fleet, Thursday.
The strong trades, described by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Race Committee as “Malihini wind,” worked their magic as Doug Gibson’s crew with Liliana Perry, 9, as its junior, topped the fleet on a 1:05:23 elapsed sail over the 6.04-mile course and corrected out to 1:07:02 PHRF and 1:03:43 CLUB for top honors in both divisions as the NYC hosted the Junior Series, Race No. 2.
OZone, the Olson 30 that captured top honors with Melissa Rapozo in last week’s series-opening race, finished second on a 1:09:17 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:09:23 PHRF and 1:07:31 CLUB.
Fast Company, another Olson 30, returned to the water with Junior Fered Webb, finishing third overall just about a minute back of OZone, the two Olson 30s always putting up a strong competitive showing.
Fast Company crossed on a 1:10:42 elapsed and corrected out to 1:10:49 PHRF and 1:08:15 CLUB.
Speedy, the third Olson 30 in the race, finished fourth overall on a 1:12:53 elapsed sail and corrected out to 1:13:00 PHRF and 1:06:15 CLUB. Quahah Green, celebrating a 16th birthday last week, was Speedy’s junior.
Papa‘au, an Express 27, finished fifth overall on a 1:6:44 elapsed sail and corrected out to 1:13:2 PHRF, just 27 seconds back of Speedy, and 1:07:52 CLUB. Rose McGovern, 9, was its qualifying junior.
Bonjolea, an X-342, also returned to the races, crossing on a 1:17:13 elapsed sail and correcting out to 1:14:15 PHRF and 1:04:56 CLUB. It did not have a junior on board and was assessed a point penalty to her score.
The Junior Series continues Thursday and the public is invited to view the competition free of charge at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor jetty wall.
First flags fly at 5 p.m.
