KAPA‘A — Makana Aki finished with a game-high 10 points, but that could not overcome the balanced attack of Hanakila B in Hanakila’s 33-18 win over the Kaua‘i Ballers, Tuesday night.
Hanakila fielded both its A and B teams in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 14 and Under boys summer league with the Hanakila A being victimized by the Westside Basketball, 31-22 in the opener at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Westside Basketball coach Dino Pabre was pushing the clock because he had a Boys 12 and Under game scheduled for the same night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, said Karen Matsumoto of the KYBA.
“He started the Kapa‘a game a little earlier and was hoping he could make it to Kalaheo in time for his team’s game, there,” Matsumoto said.
That juggling must have worked for Pabre whose Westside Basketball 12 and Under team took a 43-25 win over Lihu‘e at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center behind the strong showing of Briggs Agu, who netted 11 points, with Bobby Oliver tagging 10 points. Kasen Castro and Jamin Fernandez chipped in seven points apiece and Joel Soriano ended with five points in the win.
Lanakila Wilson paced the Lihu‘e effort with a game-high 12 points followed by Michael Dasalla with seven points.
Westside showed strong with a 9-point lead from Christian Acob, followed by Mark Abalos adding eight points. Bobby Oliver, making the trip to Kapa‘a before Kalaheo, added four points along with Jed Lagoc. Darrin Sagucio finished with three points, Koa Lagapa added a pair and a digit from Agu rounded out the Kapa‘a win.
Rashaan Kuhaulua paced the Hanakila A effort with nine points, matching Acob’s lead. Angelito Roslin added five points, Tryston Dela Cruz added four points and pairs from Jackson McCullough and Dave Aguinaldo rounded out the showing.
James Stevens picked up the lead for Hanakila B in its win over the Kaua‘i Ballers with eight points, followed by Denmark Aladin adding seven marks. Christian Roslin added seven points including an opening frame three-ball. Matthew Cummings had five first-quarter points, Brison Nacapuy finished with four points coming in the final frame and a pair from Justin Apilado rounded out the win.
Aki topped the Kaua‘i Ballers with his 10 points, followed by Junard Mata adding six points. A pair from Steven McCabe, strong in the paint, rounded out the effort.
The Kaua‘i Ballers Under 12 team picked up a 34-19 win over Team Central with Michael Booth garnering a game-high 15 points, followed by Jonah Howard and Thomas Yam adding nine and eight points, respectively.
Kaone Miguel paced the Team Central effort with eight points followed by Andrew Vetter adding four points.
In the opener, Hanakila Under 12 boys emerged a 40-33 winner over the West Kaua‘i Hornets behind Keali‘i Colipano’s 18 points, followed by Dante Dikeman adding 11 points, and Lexton Camat finishing with seven points.
Reymund Mendoza topped all scorers with 19 points to lead the Hornets’ effort, followed by Seaton Farias and Bernny Ned ending with four points apiece.
KYBA suspends league play until Saturday while it hosts the 17 and Under Boys Invitational tournament featuring the visiting Pu‘uloa Bandits and Ikaika Basketball from O‘ahu.
The invitational tournament runs from Thursday through Saturday with KYBA league play resuming Saturday afternoon when the Under 14 Girls take the floor starting at 2 p.m. when the Kaua‘i Ballers B go up against Waimea.
