LIHU‘E — The Hanalei Canoe Club’s 30th Annual Ha‘ena to Hanalei Run/Walk went off without a hitch on Saturday, as 561 athletes of all ages and from all over the globe participated in the various levels of competition and the rest of the day’s events on the North Shore.
The full eight-mile course stretched from the end of the road at Ke‘e Beach and traveled through Ha‘ena, over the one-lane bridges along the coast, into Hanalei and ended at the Hanalei Pier by Black Pot Beach Park.
Water stations lined the course, as did neighbors and supporters who came out to cheer on the participants.
The day’s premier event, the eight-mile run, was won by Nic Clark in a time of 49 minutes, 20 seconds.
The top female finisher was Ginna Reid, who came in with a time of 56:20.
Among the eight-mile walking competitors, Mark Goodman topped the men’s side with a time of 1:30:14. It was Jakki Nelson stopping the clock at 1:35:40 to lead the women’s division, finishing just one second ahead of Yvette Lavigne, 70.
The 5k event began and ended at the Pier, with Johnny Grout finishing first in 19:52. Jennifer Brown was the top female runner with a time of 22:39.
The one-mile youth events also started and ended at the Pier, as Herbert Jacob ran a 5:56 mile to claim first place in the 11-14 age group.
Sunny Patey was the first girl to finish, coming from the 7-10 age group, with a time of 6:24.
The post-race festivities included a pancake breakfast on the Hanalei River.
