Boys 17 Under tournament starts Thursday
KALAHEO — Kalia Shimabukuro fired a game-high 16 points to lead the Kamikaze to a 25-22 win, Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Shai Anne Abigania finished with nine points and three girls added four points apiece as the Kaua‘i Ballers took a 23-14 edge over Kaulupono in the second of two Girls 12 and Under games hosted by the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association and the County of Kaua‘i.
The Kamikaze trailed 14-12 at the half before Shimabukuro hit the floor in the third frame, firing 11 points, including a three-ball that led Kamikaze on a 12-2 showing over Lihu‘e.
Ayzlin Kealoha-Albarado and Chyna Hanano each chipped in three points to help Shimabukuro. Hina Tafiti added a pair and a digit from Kaelee Esposo rounded out the win.
Marissa Martinez topped the Lihu‘e effort with 14 points, followed by Malyssa Manera with six points and a pair from Mie Miller.
Following Abigania’s lead for the Kaua‘i Ballers, Violet Martin, Janessa Calvan and Keisha-Lee Aki each netted four points.
Schae-Marie Tavita topped the Kaulupono effort with six points and Bree Ann Cayaban finished with four points.
League play for the KYBA 12 and Under and 14 and Under takes a break when KYBA hosts the Boys 17 and Under Invitational Tournament which tips off Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Ken Tangjian will be coaching the Pu‘uloa Bandits, a combined boys team from Kapolei and Campbell high schools. Joining Tangjian, Clay Tang will be coaching Ikaika Basketball, a team from Honolulu.
These teams will match up against Team Central, the Kaua‘i Ballers and Kaua‘i Basketball.
Team Central opens the action Thursday against the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. That game will be followed by Kaua‘i Basketball going up against Ikaika Basketball starting at 6:30 p.m. Team Central closes out the night against Pu‘uloa Bandits starting at 7:30 p.m.
Teams play for three days with the winner being determined by a win/loss record.
