NAWILIWILI — Melissa Rapozo was the charm for OZone, which handily captured the top spot in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Series, Race No. 1, Thursday.
Rapozo was the junior member of the nine-person crew aboard the Olson 30 that clearly controlled the race from the onset, stopping the clock on a 56:52 elapsed sail and correcting out to 56:57 PHRF and 55:25 CLUB for top honors.
Quanah Green celebrated a 16th birthday, Thursday, still qualifying as a junior, aboard Speedy and was the recipient of a chorus of “Happy Birthday” from the OZone crew during the warm ups that took place under 5 to 12 knot winds blowing out of the northeast.
Speedy finished in second place on a 1:04:47 elapsed sail and corrected out to 1:04:53 PHRF and 58:54 CLUB.
Papa‘au took a point penalty because it did not have a junior onboard during the race, which is one of the requirements for the Junior Series.
Papa‘au crossed the line on a 1:11:54 elapsed sail, correcting out to 1:06:50 PHRF and 1:03:35 CLUB.
The public is invited to view the competition as the NYC hosts the Junior Series, Race No. 2, Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. when the first flags fly at the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty area.
Due to the proliferation of afternoon anglers, Gibson said the NYC Race Committee declared the area wall-side of the No. 6 can as a no-sail zone due to fishing lines in the water.
Fathers and families are reminded that the annual NYC Father’s Day fishing contest with Bill Georgi as chair will take place on June 20 for Kaua‘i’s keiki. More details on that event will be forthcoming.
There is no charge for spectators to view the races, or the fishing contest.
