LIHU‘E — A vehicle crash in the early-morning hours of Friday closed Kuhio Highway for several hours, and disrupted Kapa‘a-area businesses along the highway when telecommunications wires were knocked out.
A portion of the highway in Kapa‘a was closed due to a traffic crash that occurred on the highway between Kukui and Niu streets, states a county press release.
Traffic was being re-routed through Lehua Street while some emergency utility work was completed.
Some highway businesses in the Kapa‘a area were without access to credit-card machines and telephone lines because of the crash, they said.
The crash, which occurred at around midnight, involved a northbound Dodge Ram truck that apparently crossed the center line, striking an unoccupied vehicle in front of Lava Lounge and then continuing north, striking a fire hydrant and a pedestrian-crossing sign and shearing a utility pole in half before coming to a stop, the release states.
The driver and his passenger were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment and were reportedly in good condition early Friday morning.
Kaua‘i Police Department officers are continuing their investigation of the incident.
