LIHU‘E — The ‘Bows will be looking to turn back the Tide this weekend.
For the second time in four years, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine softball squad will play in the NCAA Super Regionals with a chance to move on to the Women’s College World Series.
Hawai‘i (47-13, 19-1 WAC) has its work cut out for itself, taking on the University of Alabama Crimson Tide (51-9, 23-4 SEC), which is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
Making matters worse, UH will have to deal with ‘Bama’s home crowd as all games will be played at the school’s softball complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The best-of-three series gets underway today at 12:30 p.m. HST, with the game being broadcast on ESPNU.
It will also be availabe on ESPN 1420 AM radio.
Game 2 is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. Hawaiian, with the third game scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. (if necessary).
The ‘Bows advanced out of the Stanford Regional by sweeping their three games against UC Davis, Stanford and Texas Tech.
They got started with the 10-2 win over UC Davis, then held off Stanford, 6-3. They had two games to win one against Texas Tech on Saturday, but took care of business in the opener with another 6-3 victory.
Alabama also swept through the Tuscaloosa Regional with a 9-0 win over Alcorn State, a 5-2 win over Lipscomb, then beat Lipscomb again, 6-0, to advance.
This makes six straight years that ‘Bama has made it to the Super Regionals, as the Tide carry a 27-game win streak into today’s action.
This is just the second time the ‘Bows have made it to the Super Regionals in the program’s history. The first was in 2007 when they went up against top-ranked Tennessee, ultimately losing in three games.
