HANAMA‘ULU — After a nearly four-hour standoff with police, the county spokesperson says a 50-year-old Hanama‘ulu man was found dead Wednesday afternoon at his home.
Kaua‘i police are investigating the cause of his death.
The man called 911 at 11:06 a.m. Wednesday, informing police that he had a firearm and that he didn’t want anyone near his home.
Police responded to the scene, secured the area and blocked the road around the intersection of Hoohuki Road and Kailewa Street.
A crisis negotiator, SWAT team and mobile incident command unit were on the scene at the man’s house at 4285 Kailewa Street. Roughly 20 officers were involved, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
At around 2:58 p.m., police entered the home and discovered the body.
Nearby residents were advised to stay secure in their homes. The perimeter was controlled during the standoff.
