Gina Kaulukukui is putting together a quilt to remember those who have died by suicide. The idea is to remember them in life, she said.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in adding a piece of their lives to the quilt.
Kaulukukui has quilt squares in her office, and always carries a couple in her car. All you need to do is pick up a square from her and use your creativity to remember a loved one.
You can paint it, color it, iron-transfer an image, write on it, or even stitch something on it. Then return the square to Kaulukukui, who already has someone assigned to stitch the quilt together.
The plan is to bring the quilt every time there’s an event so people can remember the lives of those who have departed.
“Their memories are going to speak louder than anything any of us can do,” she said.
September is suicide prevention awareness month, and Kaulukui will be conducting training, but the dates have yet to be set.
November is national suicide survivors month. Kaulukukui said it’ll be an opportunity to bring survivors together and offer them support, so they know they’re not alone.
Kaulukukui can be reached at (808) 651-6637.
