KILAUEA — Sixteen years ago, a bus stop was born.
A spot on the side of Kuhio Highway across from the Menehune Food Mart in Kilauea was one of the designated stops for the ‘Iniki Express.
That site never went away, and in the absence of a hurricane, bus-riders now seek shelter under the branches of a property-owner’s wind screen.
Jeanette Robertson could not help herself, flitting through the area set off by a concrete foundation, stopping to pick up pieces of litter discarded by bus riders.
“I can’t help myself,” said Robertson, wife of Bob Robertson of the North Shore Lions Club. “You need to make the area nice for pictures. Besides, I’m a litter-picker.”
Bob Robertson is the Lion in charge of construction of the bus stop that will emerge along the highway stretch, other Lions joining the group after parking cars for the Kilauea School May Day celebration Wednesday.
Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.’s visit to the bus stop was just one of his Kilauea stops, his itinerary including judging a lei contest, spending time with kupuna and a visit to the Kilauea School May Day event.
Janine Rapozo, the county’s Transportation Agency director, said the site will finally get a bus stop courtesy of the North Shore Lions.
In addition to the bus stop there will be work done to bring the roadside curbing back to specifications, the current shoulder being eroded from the bus stops.
“It took 16 years, but finally, there’ll be a roof,” she said.
According to Gary Pacheco, known as “the mayor of Kilauea,” there should be a dedication some time in June.
