HONOLULU — The trustees of the agency that administers health benefits for state and county workers couldn’t agree on a rate hike, so they’ve decided to extend current premiums until the end of September.
The Hawai‘i Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund took the action Wednesday after failing to approve first a 22.1-percent hike, then a 17.7-percent boost and finally a 12.7-percent jump.
The trustees then failed to pass a measure calling for current rates to be extended by six months.
Earlier this year, the fund’s consultants warned it could run out of cash this year if rates weren’t hiked 26.2 percent. The figure was recently lowered to 22.1 percent.
Any rate increase would follow hikes of 23 percent to 24 percent last year.
