Moses Fierro and MarieBeth Watanabe were named the 2010 Outstanding Male and Female athletes by the Waimea High School athletic director, Wednesday.
“Waimea High School Athletic Department recognizes the student athletes for their exemplery performance in the classroom and on the athletic playing field,” said Lois Keamoai in an e-mail. “They represented Waimea High School with the utmost pride and respect.”
Fierro, who broke the 10-second 100 Meter Dash during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation track and field season, topped the Island Movers Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association finals with a gold medal 11.07 dash, bettering his 11.31 preliminary run.
He also earned gold in the 200 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 22.23, bettering his preliminary run of 22.27.
Watanabe anchored third base for the Menehune softball team that came from behind to finish in the No. 2 spot for the HHSAA Division II state championships, falling just one run short of eventual champion Pac-5. She also held the leadoff spot in the lineup.
In addition to her Outstanding Female Athlete award, Watanabe was the female recipient of the Richard M. Doi Scholarship Award.
Gavin Jardin, the first baseman of the HHSAA Division II state champion baseball team, was the male recipient of the Richard M. Doi Scholarship.
Dylan Ishihara, the catcher for the state championship baseball team, was the male recipient of the Bunji Shimomura Award.
Natasha Abadilla, a strong distance runner in both the cross country and track program, was the female recipient of the Bunji Shimomura Award.
The KIF track standout in the girls distance events also earned the Outstanding Female Scholar Athlete award, along with Ishihara getting the nod for the Outstanding Male Scholar Athlete.
Abadilla rounded out her accolades by being named the U.S. Army Scholar Athlete along with Torrey Santiago. Santiago has been a strong multi-faceted athlete in both the track and field and soccer programs.
Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi said normally these awards are done during the school’s annual athletic banquet, but due to the closeness of graduation and the completion of state competition, there was no banquet scheduled for this year.
However, the public is invited to participate in a Testimonial Lu‘au for the 2010 KIF/HHSAA Division II Baseball Champions scheduled for June 1 on the Waimea High School front lawn starting at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets may be obtained from any of the Menehune baseball players, Ishihara Market, or from Kobayashi.
The Waimea High School Athletic Department also announced its annual Blue-and-White Football game at Hanapepe Stadium.
Tickets are $10 and the game will be played May 28 starting at 7 p.m.
