2 to 4 p.m., Saturday at the Kapa‘a Library meeting room
The Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association continues its monthly speaker series with “Smart Growth: Good or Bad for Kaua‘i?” a free presentation by Kaua‘i County Councilmember Tim Bynum.
The talk will include slides from notable smart growth projects in the Puget Sound area that were highlighted at the Seattle Smart Growth Conference this February.
Visual examples of smart growth principles will assist us in evaluating how these initiatives can be applied to community planning, design, transportation and land use policies for Kaua‘i, a news release says.
Smart growth places a high value on in filling existing urban areas and avoiding sprawl into areas that are valued as greenspace. Other characteristics include mixed use development, clustering activities, walkable neighborhoods, supplying transportation options that reduce our dependency on cars, and providing a range of housing choices.
Since smart growth principles work to concentrate growth in existing cities and towns, will the outcome create undesirable levels of density in existing urban areas? Or, if Kaua‘i’s growing population makes development and expansion inevitable, will smart growth principles offer the best tools to deal with that reality? Join this important discussion about community planning.
A portion of the meeting will include updates on local issues and time to hear new concerns. For more information visit www.wkna.org or contact Association Secretary Sid Jackson at 821-2837.
