LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Red Raiders finished in sixth place in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball Division II playoffs, splitting two Thursday games to finish 2-2 in the tournament.
The Raiders started off strong with a 9-1 win over Konawaena.
Courtney La‘amea had a huge day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and seven RBIs. Tia Obrero smacked a triple and scored three times.
Pitcher Naja Pungan got the win, surrendering the one Konawaena run on just three hits.
Kaua‘i played a clean game in the field, committing no errors and capitalizing on five Konawaena miscues.
In their second game of the day, the fifth-place game, the Raiders dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker to Kalaheo.
Obrero was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, while La‘amea added two hits.
The two teams played two scoreless innings to start, before Kalaheo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Kaua‘i came right back to tie it in the bottom half, but Kalaheo added a run in the fourth for a 2-1 advantage.
It plated three more in the top of the fifth to extend to a 5-1 lead.
Kaua‘i gathered itself and put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game up at 5-5.
But Kalaheo scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth, then held Kaua‘i in the bottom half to secure the 6-5 win.
Kalaheo outhit Kaua‘i, 9-8.
