LIHU‘E — “My Mama Monologues 2010” returns to Kaua‘i with a new series of stories about mothers.
Monologue author and editor Pat Masumoto will be joined by some familiar Kaua‘i voices at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e.
“My Mama Monologues” is a play-reading of true stories written each year by men, women and children about their own mothers. Since its inception the monologues have traveled across the Mainland and as far as London, England.
“Last year ‘My Mama Monologues’ was held at a California retirement facility where an author was an art instructor,” wrote Masumoto in an e-mail. “Retirees are now writing their own stories and doing their own monologues.”
The stories have been described as “hot,” “milky,” “sweet,” “bitter,” “spicy” and “ticklish.” Two Kaua‘i authors with stories included in the monologues are Catherine Lo and Anne Welsh. Kaua‘i readers for Sunday’s performance include Mauli Ola, Delia Valentin, Judith White, Jennifer Cullen, Chad Dellatan, Jennifer Downs, Susan Lehoven, Diane Kennedy and children.
Masumoto conceived of “My Mama Monologues” as a gift to her spry, 101 year-old mother, Florence Hasegawa, who created a media flurry last fall for micro-blogging on “Twitter” at GrandmaFlorence. Her tweets will be read by her daughter and volunteers from the audience will be asked to read replies from worldwide followers.
“People young and old experience discovery and transformation when writing about their mothers,” Masumoto said in an e-mail.
