LIHU‘E — Not surprisingly, the Wamea baseball and softball teams dominated the 2010 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation All-Star selections, announced Wednesday by the KIF.
The Waimea boys, coming off their amazing run to an HHSAA Division II state championship this past weekend, snagged six of the 10 All-Star selections, as well as the premier player and coach of the season.
Senior Kalani Fernandez, who was named the Div. II tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after getting the game-winning hit in the title game, in which he also got the win on the mound, was chosen as the Player of the Year. Fernandez was a workhorse for the Menehune pitching staff, throwing upwards of 100 pitches on multiple occasions. He also came up with clutch hits along the way to propel Waimea to the KIF title.
Coach of the Year went to Michael Rita for leading his team to league and state championships. Coach Rita was not the only family member selected for excellence as Waimea senior Micah Rita was the third-base All-Star choice.
Joining Micah from his Menehune squad are sophomore pitcher Shylen-John Keuma, senior first baseman Gavin Jardin, junior second baseman Mana Perreira-Alquiza, junior outfielder Chyson Soares and senior outfielder Paul Correa.
Kaua‘i Red Raider catcher Lanan Rice-Kashima, a senior, was one of three Raiders named All-Stars. Rice-Kashima was a standout all season, both offensively and defensively.

Kapa‘a Warriors senior Brehdan Kamibayashi was chosen at the All-Star utility position.
The Lady Menehune, the No. 2 seed in the HHSAA Div. II softball tournament, took six of the nine All-Star selections.
Waimea sophomore Taylor Ephan was chosen Player of the Year, while her coach Teddy Perreira nabbed Coach of the Year honors.
