LIHU‘E — The Atherton Family Foundation recently awarded Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i $10,000 to support Kaua‘i Teen Court, a news release says.
“We are very grateful for their generosity and participation in this critical project,” Mary Navarro, Hale ‘Opio executive director, says in the release.
Since 1995, Hale ‘Opio has brought the restorative justice model to Kaua‘i which utilizes a peer jury and youth volunteers in court positions. Volunteer per diem judges help ensure the atmosphere reflects the seriousness warranted by each youth’s offense. Successful completion of their sentencing requirements results in a youth having no criminal record, the release says.
The Atherton Family Foundation joins other community support received this past year from individuals, companies, and foundations which has truly made the difference in Hale ‘Opio programs, helping the youth in its care become the future employees, parents, and community leaders of Kaua‘i, the release says.
