KALAHEO — When the budget falls short of providing necessary materials for students, parents take matters into their own hands.
For the past two years Kalaheo School parents have organized benefit concerts. This year, help Kalaheo School raise the necessary funds for school supplies by attending “Flavors of the South Shore” featuring the cuisine of Roy’s Po‘ipu Bar and Grill, Plantation Gardens, Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa, Merriman’s, Kalaheo Café, Joe’s on the Green, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Casa Blanca and Kalapaki Joe’s.
“We are getting no federal funding,” said parent organizer, Renee Kester. “There’s not money for copy paper or paints or any kind of construction paper or consumable supplies. Teachers need these things for elementary-level kids.”
Kester said teachers don’t even have money for their math text books.
“We are just trying to step in and get that gap filled,” she said.
The evening benefit includes pupu and a silent auction boasting hotel stays, golf rounds, portrait sessions, spa treatments and original art.
Kester estimates up to $8,000 in donations have been collected from local businesses.
“We want to bill it as an adult evening out since there are only 250 tickets available,” she said.
The event is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 15 at Kaua‘i Christian Fellowship Church in Po‘ipu. Tickets are $25. No children under 15 are allowed.
