As festive as a bon dance, this festival will be rich with cultural demonstrations, displays, games and prizes. Most of the activities will be hands-on and free. Kaua‘i Academy of Creative Arts summer program is accepting students for its visual- and performing-arts classes running June 14 to July 9. Students may choose to participate in all-day sessions from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.; the morning session from 8 a.m. to noon; or the afternoon session from 12:40 to 4:40 p.m. The program is open to all youth ages 6 and up. Six year-olds must have completed first grade. The young people can choose from classes in theater, beadwork, painting and drawing; Polynesian/aboriginal art, airbrushing, recycled-wire sculpture, African drumming, keyboard, hip-hop dance and magical mask-making. Information and registration available at Lihu‘e and Kapa‘a public libraries and the following schools: Island, Wilcox, St. Catherine, Kapa‘a Elementary, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle, Kalaheo and Koloa. A family day of “ma ka hana ka ‘ike,” or “through working one learns.” Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for working in the ‘auwai (taro-irrigation system). A change of clothing is recommended, and participants should bring water bottles, hats and tabis. Lunch will be provided from produce grown at Waipa (one mile past Hanalei School). Johnston, a biblical studies major, is joined by more than 1,565 other students receiving the same honor.
