LIHU‘E — The opening round of the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association David S. Ishii Foundation Golf Championships took place Tuesday at the Turtle Bay Resort on O‘ahu.
Kelli Oride of Kaua‘i High School sits in second place in the girls individual standings after firing a 74 (37-37), Tuesday.
Teammates Taylor Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas were also in action, Viquella finishing with a 79 (40-39) and Tomas coming away with a 90 (44-46).
As a team, Kaua‘i is in fourth place with a 243 total. Baldwin and Punahou are tied for the first-round lead at 229, followed by Waiakea at 240. Moanalua and Mid-Pacific round out the top six.
Oride is tied for second place with Waiakea’s Nani Yanagi, as each are hoping to overcome Baldwin’s Cassy Isagawa, who sits one stroke ahead after a 73 (37-36).
The girls field is still wide open, as 18 players sit within seven shots of first place.
Kapa‘a’ High School’s Sean Mamaclay fired an 84 (41-43) to top the KIF boys. The Red Raiders had five members of its boys team in action, with Levi Miyashiro (42-45) and Pono Tokioka (43-44) each finishing with 87s.
Walter Castillo went for an 89 (43-46), Reyn Morioka had a 93 (48-45) and Braeden Robley finished with a 96 (48-48).
Kamehameha Big Island’s Nainoa Calip topped the boys overall scores with a 71 (36-35). He was followed by both Rudy Cabalar, of Campbell, and Thayer Schmitz, of St. Louis, at 72.
Punahou leads the boys team scoring, finishing the day with a total of 299. Moanalua sits in second at 305, followed by ‘Iolani (309), Baldwin (321) and Kamehameha O‘ahu (321).
Kaua‘i sits in 11th place with a total of 356.
Final round of the HHSAA/David Ishii continues with the girls playig the Fazio Course and the boys on the Palmer course, teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
