HONOLULU — The final regional round of the Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series presented by HSA was held at Kewalos over the weekend, now setting the stage for the Hard Rock Cafe Skull Candy State Championships at Ala Moana Bowls, Thursday through Saturday. Finals will be held on both Friday and Saturday, according to a press release.
More than 200 surfers from around the state of Hawai‘i will compete in a variety of age group and surf discipline divisions over the three-day championships. Top finishers will qualify for the national championships in Southern California next month.
Smooth, head-high surf at Kewalos provided the final battle ground for surfers looking to qualify for this week’s State Championships. The most hotly contested divisions included the Junior Men’s, Boys, Girls, and 11 & Under category. These divisions are considered the window to tomorrow’s pro surfing stars and will be the focus of the surf industry come Thursday.
Top youngsters set to compete in the State Championships include Ezekiel Lau, EJ Mitsui, Kaimana Jaquias, Matty Costa, Kaoli Kahokuloa, Noa Mizuno, Kaulana Apo, Micah Liana, Finn & Dax McGill, Elijah Gates, Vanina Walsh, Maluhia Kinimaka, Alessa Quizon, Mahina Maeda, Leila Hurst and Nage Melamed.
