Kaua‘i Backstory hosted three successful and acclaimed authors at its April 26 Reading Series at the Kaua‘i Community College Learning Resource Center (library) — and other local talent showed up as well.
The event filled the presentation space and overflowed onto the stairs and couches chock full of aspiring writers and literary buffs. The event began with writers Jill Marie Landis, Stella Cameron and Kristin Hannah sharing their insight into the process of writing and what it takes to become published with author hopefuls in the audience. The common thread throughout the published authors’ shared stories of what it takes to begin a career in writing was there is no such thing as a magic formula — just hard work and resilience.
The second half of the session brought the Kaua’i authors to the stage to share their writing. All of the works were heartfelt and honest — from the simple lessons of being thankful, set forth by children’s author Debra Ryll presented in her poem “Thank You,” to the deep, soulful resonations recited by Kimie Sadayama in her ode to Wai‘ale‘ale.
The authors were more than willing to personally talk with the audience and partake of communal cupcakes provided by the event organizer, Lois Ann Ell, as they mingled together in the library foyer until the library itself closed. Amidst the conversations the authors themselves remarked at how impressed they were with the local talent displayed at the reading.
