LIHU‘E — Trent Thompson and Braxton Garma finished with 10 points apiece to lead the Kalaheo Stars to a 40-39 edge over Tropang-L during the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 18 and Over men’s basketball league, Wednesday night.
Micah Bermoy stepped up for 13 points to lead the Batty Boys, who currently lead the league standings, to a 39-36 win over Manny’s Sports at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
“We had two close games,” said Karen Matsumoto of the KYBA.
In the Kalaheo Stars victory, four leaders pulled the team, led by the 10-point contributions of Garma and Thompson. Nouveau Naumu finished with nine points and big man Olin Claussen added eight points. A pair from Jim Aronica and a digit from Brandon Wong rounded out the victory.
Jaymark Serapio finished with a game-high 11 points for Tropang-L, followed by James Badua and Sammy Perpose chipping in seven points apiece. Jr. Punzalan, the Tropang-L captain, ended with six points, followed by Ian Nerida adding four and pairs from Eugene Mariano and Reggie Punzalan.
Tropang-L took a 10-8 first quarter lead behind Serapio’s six points, but the Stars exploded for a 15-8 second quarter, taking a 23-18 halftime lead behind Garma’s five points which included a three-ball, his second of the night, and buckets from Claussen and Thompson.
Following Bermoy’s lead, Jed Balmidiano and Kyle Pigao netted eight points each for the Batty Boys, who pulled ahead of a 19-19 halftime deadlock.
Kekoa Prem and Matt Lindsey pocketed four points apiece to give Manny’s Sports a 13-12 advantage in the third period, but saw Balmidiano, David Medeiros and Pigao lead the 8-4 final period charge with pairs for the Batty Boys.
Medeiros finished with five points, Clareson Torres had four first-half points and a digit from James Sagucio rounded out the edge.
Prem topped the Manny’s Sports scoring with eight points, followed by Rich Colipano and Spam Lindsey adding six points each. Matt Lindsey and Manolito Pescador added four points apiece, Bronson Bautista finished with three. Daniel Simao and Kainoa Colipano eached paired and a digit from Kekoa Colipano rounded out the effort.
The Wednesday night results set up the next series of games which Matsumoto said might have a forfeit, or be rescheduled due to members of Tropang-L pulling evening shifts.
Playoffs for the league start Tuesday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m. when the second seed plays the third seed followed by the top seeded Batty Boys meeting Tropang-L at 7 p.m.
