LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a’s Rachael Hinkel picked up a state time and two considerations, and Darren Taylor picked up a state time during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet, Friday.
With the Waimea High School team and coaching staff absent from the meet, Kaua‘i girls pocketed 181 points over Kapa‘a’s 167 points while the Kapa‘a boys finished with 194 points to Kaua‘i’s 179 points and Island School’s 22 points.
This weekend is the KIF Championships and Friday was the last opportunity for KIF track and field participants to prepare for that event, which starts with qualifying on Thursday before the Friday championships.
The public is advised that Thursday night’s qualifying has no admission fee, but the Friday championships has a gate charge.
Hinkel charged out to take a first finish in the Girls 100 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 12.7 seconds, just making the state cut of 12.7 for hand times. She went on to finish first in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles on a 53.3 run, surpassing the state consideration standard of 51.0. Hinkel pocketed a consideration time in the Girls 200 Meter Dash, stopping the clocks at 26.7, falling just .2 seconds short of the state standard of 26.5, revised on April 5.
Kimberly Liberato of the Red Raiders squad topped the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles on a 16.9 run, earning a consideration time, but falling short of the state qualifying by a mere .5 seconds.
Kainoa Naihe, Kristle Henry and Reanna Javinar each earned consideration performances in the field events, Naihe leaping to a first finish in the Girls Long Jump and Javinar finishing first in the Girls Triple Jump on a 33-feet, 10-inch leap. Henry, finishing second in the Girls Long Jump with a 15-05 leap, also earned a consideration.
Taylor pocketed his state time in the Boys 100 Meter Dash on a first finish of 10.9, exceeding the state standard by .1 seconds, and got a consideration in his first finish in the Boys 200 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 23.3, the exact consideration standard for that event.
Kaua‘i’s Darren Acoba finished the Boys 100 Meter Dash in second on a 11.2 run, the mark for state consideration.
Acoba returned for a state performance in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles, stopping the clock on a 14.9 run (state 15.5). He finished just .1 seconds short of a consideration in his first-place finish of 43.1 in the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles.
Pierce Murphy of Island School continued his pace in the Boys 3,000 Meter Run, stopping the clock on a 9:00.3 run, almost 40 seconds faster than the state standard of 9:39.2. In that event, Kaua‘i’s Joshua Herr, running in Murphy’s shadow, stopped the clock at 9:58.1, bettering the consideration standard of 10:08.
Michael Kahoekapu-Cruz and Scott Sasan, both of Kaua‘i, earned consideration throws with their first and second finishes in the Boys Discus, Kahoekapu-Cruz getting a throw of 142-04 and Sasan rattling the discus on his 136-11 fling.
Logan Domingo of Island School topped the Boys High Jump on a 5-10 leap, surpassing the state consideration of 5-08. Treston Brede of Kapa‘a, in second for the event, got a consideration with his 5-08 leap.
Kepa Nakaahiki of Kaua‘i also picked up a consideration in the Boys Shot Put with a placement of 44-01.50, bettering the consideration standard of 43-05.25.
